Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between escapism motivation and celebrity worship among Generation Z social media users. A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 162 participants aged 18–28 years residing in the Jabodetabek area, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS) and the Escapism Motivation Scale. Due to non-normal data distribution, Spearman’s Rho correlation analysis was applied. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between escapism motivation and celebrity worship (r = -0.55; p < 0.05), indicating that higher levels of psychological escape tendencies are associated with lower levels of attachment to celebrities, and vice versa. Additional analysis showed that age significantly differentiated all research variables, while domicile influenced the intense/personal dimension of celebrity worship. These findings suggest that celebrity worship does not primarily function as a mechanism of psychological escape but rather as a limited form of emotional compensation. This study contributes to the development of digital psychology literature and provides insights for promoting adaptive social media use and digital literacy among Generation Z.
