ABSTRACT
Social media use among young people has increased significantly and has become an essential part of everyday social interaction. Although social media provides various benefits, its use has also been associated with mental health problems, one of which is social anxiety. However, previous studies on the effects of active and passive social media use on social anxiety have produced inconsistent findings, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive review to better understand the relationship between the two. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the differences in the effects of active and passive social media use on social anxiety and to identify the patterns of their relationship. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by examining empirical research articles selected through a systematic screening process based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The findings indicate that passive social media use is more consistently associated with increased social anxiety compared to active use, whereas active use demonstrates more contextual effects depending on individual experiences and characteristics. In addition, the relationship between social media use and social anxiety was identified as bidirectional, in which individuals with higher levels of social anxiety tend to engage in more passive social media use. These findings provide implications for the development of digital literacy and mental health interventions that place greater emphasis on patterns of social media use among adolescents.
