ABSTRACT
This research is motivated by the relationship between literature and the environment. Literary works become mouthpieces to voice environmental issues. Tere Liye's novel Amelia was used as the object of research because it significantly depicts the exploitation of natural resources in the Bukit Barisan Valley. The approach used is literary ecology. This study aims to explore the representation of natural resource exploitation in the Bukit Barisan Valley in Tere Liye's Amelia novel through the perspective of literary ecology. Qualitative analysis methods with a descriptive approach are applied to identify and interpret various forms of exploitation presented in the novel's story, such as deforestation, logging, rattan and bamboo utilization, coffee cultivation, and wild mushroom collection. The results show that Amelia's book reflects the complexity of interactions between local communities and their natural environment, where utilizing natural resources for daily and economic needs can potentially cause ecological impacts. This representation not only highlights exploitation activities but also shows an increase in environmental awareness in the narrative. This study concludes that literature, especially popular novels, can significantly reflect ecological issues and increase a deeper understanding of the interaction between humans and nature.
