Abstract

ABSTRACT

Epigenetics is a mechanism of changes in gene expression without altering an individual’s basic DNA structure. Environmental factors such as culture, parenting patterns, traumatic experiences, and supernatural beliefs are thought to influence epigenetic processes that contribute to the emergence of mental disorders, including schizophrenia with hallucinatory symptoms. Social environments that reinforce certain supernatural beliefs may affect how individuals interpret psychological experiences, thereby potentially worsening mental health conditions. This study aims to determine the role of epigenetics in shaping the influence of culture and beliefs as epigenetic pro-modulators and contributing factors to the emergence of schizophrenia symptoms. The study employed a descriptive approach using case analysis of patients experiencing hallucinatory disorders. The research stages included identifying patients’ socio-cultural environmental histories, traumatic experiences, experiences of violence, and delays in medical treatment. The data were then analyzed to examine the relationship between environmental factors and the psychological conditions of the patients. The findings revealed that there were 9 cases of patients with hallucinatory disorders, all of whom had a history related to indigo environments (100%) and supernatural beliefs (100%). In addition, all patients had experienced severe traumatic stress (100%), while a history of violence was found in 66% of the cases. The study also identified delays in seeking treatment in 55% of patients due to the strong influence of certain cultural and belief systems in interpreting symptoms of mental disorders. These findings indicate that schizophrenia is a complex psychotic disorder influenced by interactions among genetic, epigenetic, environmental, and cultural factors. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach involving clinical intervention, cultural education, and early detection is essential to support more comprehensive and sustainable schizophrenia management.
