Abstract

ABSTRACK

Negative emotion regulation is an important ability for students in dealing with various changes and pressures during adolescence. Difficulties in managing emotions may lead to maladaptive responses in social life and the learning process. One approach that can help students develop this ability is group counseling using mindfulness, which emphasizes awareness of present experiences and acceptance of thoughts and feelings without judgment. This study aimed to examine the effect of group counseling using mindfulness techniques on negative emotion regulation among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 21 Mataram. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 10 students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a negative emotion regulation scale and analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The results showed that the mean score increased from 35.20 in the pretest to 55.20 in the posttest, representing an increase of 20.00 points. The paired sample t-test yielded t = 8.273, df = 9, and Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05*, indicating a significant difference between scores before and after the intervention. Thus, group counseling using mindfulness techniques had a significant effect on students’ negative emotion regulation and may serve as an alternative guidance and counseling service in schools.
