Abstract

ABSTRACT

Generation Z (Gen-Z) grows up in a digital environment characterized by various changes in lifestyle patterns and psychological pressures, creating a need for mental health education approaches that address not only psychological aspects but also spiritual dimensions. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature synthesis to formulate a reactualization of the concept of Tazkiyatun Nafs as an adaptive mental health education model for Gen-Z. This library-based study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design by adapting the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and using thematic synthesis techniques. The literature search was conducted through Google Scholar, DOAJ, SINTA, and Moraref, with criteria focusing on scholarly journal articles relevant to Tazkiyatun Nafs, Islamic psychology, mental health, and younger generations. Of the 142 articles identified, 15 articles met the criteria for extraction and synthesis. The synthesis results indicate that the reactualization of Tazkiyatun Nafs can be formulated into three pedagogical stages: Takhalli, conceptualized as reducing attachment to digital pressures and distractions; Tahalli, as the internalization of self-regulation skills through gratitude practices and Islamic mindfulness; and Tajalli, as an orientation toward psychological stability, self-maturity, and the discovery of meaning in life. These three stages form an integrative mental health education framework that is conceptual, preventive, and promotive in nature, supporting the development of self-regulation, psychological maturity, and spiritual well-being among Gen-Z, rather than serving as a clinically validated intervention. In conclusion, the reactualization of Tazkiyatun Nafs offers a conceptual framework that connects Islamic spiritual values with the mental health education needs of Gen-Z and can serve as a basis for further model development and empirical testing.
