ABSTRACT
Academic stress is a widespread problem among university students and has the potential to impair both psychological well-being and the learning process. However, findings on its causes and consequences remain scattered across studies with different foci, contexts, and methods. This article aims to identify and synthesize the factors of academic stress among university students and to examine their relationship with academic achievement, learning concentration, attendance, and academic performance. The review was conducted as a literature study of 18 scientific publications from 2021–2026, consisting of empirical studies, literature reviews, and meta-analyses, which were then analyzed thematically and comparatively. The synthesis shows that academic stressors originate from four interrelated groups of factors: academic demands; personal conditions (mindset, perfectionism, time management, and sleep quality); social and family pressure; and situational contexts such as the transition period of study and the pandemic. The relationship between stress and academic achievement is not uniform: some studies report a negative association, whereas others find no significant relationship, so the effect of stress appears to operate indirectly through sleep, motivation, mental health, and coping strategies. The influence on concentration is supported by stronger evidence than the influence on attendance, which has rarely been tested directly. This article recommends strengthening counseling services, managing study workload, and conducting further empirical research.
