Abstract

The high use of social media in the digital era has the potential to increase loneliness. This condition is often experienced by university students who are in the stage of emerging adulthood, a transitional phase marked by various developmental demands. Loneliness in this phase is often associated with decreased self-esteem, which can lead to dissatisfaction with oneself and affect several aspects of students' lives. One external factor known to influence self-esteem is social support. Social support provides a sense of being valued, accepted, and acknowledged by the surrounding environment, which can strengthen positive self-evaluation. This study aims to examine whether there is a relationship between social support and self-esteem among university students who are vulnerable to low self-esteem due to developmental demands and loneliness. This study uses a quantitative approach with correlation analysis to test the relationship between the two variables. A total of 262 participants were recruited using non-probability sampling techniques. The results show that social support has a small positive relationship with self-esteem among lonely students in the digital era. These findings indicate that the higher the social support received by students, the higher their self-esteem tends to be. Therefore, social support is proven to be a contributing factor to self-esteem among students experiencing loneliness in the digital era.
