Abstract

This study examines the impact of video game addiction on self-esteem in young adults. Although video games are a popular form of entertainment, excessive use—defined as playing more than 3 hours per day with negative impacts on mental and social health—was found to have a significant negative association with self-esteem. Individuals who are addicted tend to have low self-esteem, often using gaming as an escape from reality or to seek social validation. This condition is also associated with poor interpersonal relationships, which increases the risk of social isolation and worsens their self-confidence. This study highlights the importance of understanding the psychological impact of video game addiction in young adults, who are in a critical phase of identity development and social relationships. Low levels of self-esteem make individuals more vulnerable to the negative impacts of addiction, such as difficulties in forming healthy relationships and obstacles in psychosocial development. The results of this study provide insights for the development of interventions aimed at helping individuals manage their gaming time more healthily. These interventions are expected to improve psychological well-being and support the development of better social relationships for affected young adults.
