The rapid development of the internet and social media has increased the risk of cyberbullying, particularly among university students who are highly engaged in online platforms. Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between empathy and cyberbullying behavior. While some studies suggest that empathy plays a significant role in reducing cyberbullying tendencies, others have found no significant association between the two variables. These inconsistent findings indicate a research gap that warrants further investigation, especially among university students in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek). Therefore, this study aimed to examine the role of empathy in cyberbullying behavior among active university students. This study employed a quantitative approach using a purposive sampling technique and involved 111 active university students in the Jabodetabek region. Data were collected using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) to measure empathy and the Cyberbullying in Social Media Scale (CSMS) to assess cyberbullying behavior. Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation analysis. The findings revealed that students generally demonstrated high levels of empathy and low levels of cyberbullying behavior. Correlation analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between empathy and cyberbullying behavior. These results indicate that empathy may not be the primary factor influencing cyberbullying behavior among university students. The study highlights the importance of considering other contributing factors, such as anonymity, moral disengagement, emotional intelligence, peer influence, and family environment, in developing effective strategies to prevent and address cyberbullying among university students.
