Abstract

Self-concept is a fundamental psychological pillar during late childhood that shapes how individuals perceive their physical, psychological, and social attributes. Initial observations at SDN X West Jakarta revealed that most fifth-grade students encountered difficulties in articulating their strengths, weaknesses, and personal characteristics verbally during classroom discussions. Therefore, this Community Engagement (PKM) initiative was conducted to facilitate students' exploration and recognition of their self-concept through a projective-creative animal drawing activity titled the "Knowing Myself" program. The activity involved 41 fifth-grade elementary students aged 10–11 years who were guided to draw three different animals as metaphors representing physical characteristics, personality traits, and daily routines. Program achievement was evaluated using a descriptive qualitative approach based on worksheet completion, artwork presentations, and guided reflection sessions. The results demonstrated that 87.8% of the students successfully achieved the completion criteria in identifying and narrating the three dimensions of self-concept through the behavioral metaphors of their chosen animals. Symbolic animal drawing proved to be an effective, recreational, and psychologically safe concrete medium for elementary school children to articulate self-identity without evaluation anxiety. This program serves as a practical initial screening tool for elementary school educators to recognize students' psychosocial dynamics at an early stage.
