Abstract

The contemporary workplace faces increasing challenges in recruiting candidates who possess not only strong academic qualifications but also adequate interpersonal competencies. One essential competency is interpersonal communication, which plays a crucial role in enhancing work effectiveness, collaboration, and professional readiness. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of an experiential learning-based outbound training program in improving interpersonal communication skills among professional psychology students. The research employed a one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design without a control group, involving 35 first-semester students enrolled in a professional psychology program, selected through purposive sampling. The intervention was conducted over six hours in three structured sessions targeting openness, empathy, positive attitudes, equality, and social support. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test to examine differences before and after the intervention. The results indicated a significant improvement in interpersonal communication skills following the training, t(34) = -3.28, p = 0.001, with a medium effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.55). These findings demonstrate that experiential learning-based outbound training is effective in enhancing students’ interpersonal communication skills. Theoretically, this study strengthens the application of experiential learning models in soft skills development within higher education. Practically, it provides recommendations for educational institutions to integrate experience-based learning methods into student competency development programs.
