ABSTRACT
Father involvement in family education remains more limited than maternal involvement, resulting in suboptimal father–child relationships. This issue is important because father attachment plays a significant role in supporting children's social, emotional, and psychological development. In the Minangkabau community, which adopts a matrilineal kinship system, fathers continue to hold an essential role in family education; however, studies examining father attachment within this cultural context remain limited. This study aimed to describe father attachment as an integral component of family education in Minangkabau culture from the perspective of late adolescents. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed involving 166 Minangkabau late adolescents aged 18–21 years living in Padang City, selected through accidental sampling. Data were collected using the father version of the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Revised (IPPA-R) and analyzed descriptively using JASP. The findings revealed that father attachment was generally at a moderate level, with trust emerging as the strongest dimension, followed by communication and alienation. These findings indicate that father–child relationships are primarily built on mutual trust, although the quality of communication requires further strengthening. The study highlights the importance of developing fathering education programs that emphasize effective communication, emotional involvement, and the integration of Minangkabau cultural values into family education.
