Abstract

The practice of shackling people with mental disorders (ODGJ) still occurs in Malaka Regency. This study aims to uncover the reasons why families still practice shackling their family members with mental disorders. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Participants in this study were selected using a snowball sampling technique. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, while the data analysis technique used the Creswell model case study data analysis. The results of the study indicate that shackling is carried out as a last resort due to aggressive behavior of family members. This decision is based on the family's inability to control aggressive behavior, limited access to health services, economic limitations, and low family understanding of mental disorders. Pressure from society and family experiences when family members relapse also strengthen the family's decision to shackle their family members. Limited resources and suboptimal care make shackling the choice of families, this decision also has a negative impact on family members both physically and psychologically and adds to the emotional burden on the family.
