Abstract

ABSTRACT

Traditional sports serve as an important cultural heritage and hold strong potential as experience-based tourism attractions; however, in Surabaya, their practice remains mostly event-based and has not been strategically integrated into the city’s tourism development agenda. In this case, it is important to conduct an analysis of the current conditions regarding the preservation and practices of six major traditional sports, namely hadang, egrang, long clogs, blowpipe shooting, dagongan, and tug of war, as well as to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing their transformation toward sustainable creative sport tourism. Using a qualitative approach with method triangulation through Google Form responses, field documentation, and literature review, the findings reveal that traditional sports are predominantly practiced during national celebrations, educational festivals, village cultural events, and community-based public activities, but they have yet to evolve into regular tourist attractions. Key challenges identified include limited promotion and branding (82% of respondents), insufficient training facilities, low youth engagement, and suboptimal cross-sector collaboration. Based on these insights, the study proposes strategic directions such as digital storytelling, event-based marketing, multiparty collaboration, and a sustainable development model grounded in community  preservation and creative innovation. The study concludes  that traditional sports  possess  significant  potential  to become  a cultural  tourism identity for Surabaya, provided that strategic and sustainable development policies are implemented.
