ABSTRACT
Drum brakes are components of braking systems that are subjected to thermal and mechanical loading. This study aims to analyze the effects of fillet modifications and cooling groove geometries on the thermomechanical response of drum brakes using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method. Seven geometric configurations were simulated at braking speeds of 40, 60, 80, and 100 km/h, evaluating temperature, total deformation, von Mises stress, safety factor, and fatigue life. The simulation results indicate that geometric modifications have a relatively minor effect on maximum temperature and deformation but a greater influence on stress distribution. At a braking speed of 100 km/h, the 28° slant-tapered geometry produced the lowest von Mises stress of 27.311 MPa and the highest safety factor of 2.8569. Compared with the slant-grooved geometry, the 0.2 mm fillet modification reduced the maximum stress by 21.76%, while the 28° slant-tapered geometry reduced it by 43.53%. All configurations yielded a fatigue life of 1 × 10⁸ cycles because they reached the runout limit of the S–N curve used. These results indicate that the 28° slant-tapered geometry exhibited the best mechanical response among the simulated configurations. The findings may serve as an initial consideration for drum brake design optimization; however, they do not establish superior safety performance under actual operating conditions.
Dibandingkan geometri slant-grooved, modifikasi fillet 0,2 mm menurunkan tegangan maksimum sebesar 21,76%, sedangkan geometri slant-tapered 28° menurunkannya sebesar 43,53%.
