Abstract

ABSTRACT

Cheating remains an academic integrity problem at the senior high school level, while findings on the role of self-efficacy in this behavior remain inconsistent. This study aimed to examine academic self-efficacy as a predictor of cheating behavior among senior high school students. The study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional correlational-predictive design. Participants were 85 twelfth-grade social science students at a public senior high school in Trenggalek Regency, Indonesia, recruited through total sampling. Self-efficacy was measured using an adapted version of the General Self-Efficacy Scale consisting of 10 items (α = .880), whereas cheating behavior was measured using a scale developed from Cizek’s three dimensions of cheating consisting of 17 items (α = .820) after content validation and item selection. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression after the assumptions of normality, linearity, and homoscedasticity were met. The results showed that self-efficacy positively and significantly predicted cheating behavior (b = 0.238; β = 0.226; p = .037), accounting for 5.1% of its variance. This direction differs from most previous studies, which reported a negative relationship. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the relationship was weak and sensitive to extreme scores; therefore, it should be interpreted with caution. The findings suggest that high self-confidence does not automatically prevent students from cheating when it is not accompanied by the internalization of academic honesty. Schools need to combine the strengthening of self-efficacy with academic integrity education and consistent examination supervision.
