Abstract

ABSTRACT

Ruminant livestock productivity in Indonesia still faces major challenges, particularly due to limited feed quality during the dry season and insufficient utilisation of agricultural waste. This community service programme aims to improve goat productivity through rice straw fermentation technology using modified goat rumen. The activities were carried out in the "Karya Bakti" farmer group in Lemper Village, Pamekasan, which has great potential for utilising abundant rice straw waste. The program stages include training, production of rumen-based fermentation starter with the addition of turmeric and ginger, rice straw fermentation for 14 days, feeding the fermented feed to goats for 30 days, and evaluating its impact on livestock productivity. Research results indicate that rice straw fermentation can increase protein content from 3.2% to 14.5% and reduce crude fibre from 34.6% to 20.1%. Additionally, pH levels decreased from 6.5 to 3.8, indicating successful fermentation in creating ideal anaerobic conditions. As a result, the average weight of goats increased by 4.1 kg over 30 days of fermented feed administration, accompanied by improved appetite and feed efficiency. This programme provides a practical solution for farmers facing limited feed availability during the dry season while supporting the optimal utilisation of agricultural waste. In conclusion, rice straw fermentation technology has proven effective in improving feed quality and livestock productivity. It is recommended to replicate this programme in other farming communities with similar conditions and conduct further research to enhance fermentation efficiency and reduce production costs. Thus, this programme has the potential to support national meat self-sufficiency and empower local farmers.

Produktivitas ternak ruminansia di Indonesia masih menghadapi kendala besar, terutama karena terbatasnya kualitas pakan selama musim kemarau dan kurangnya pemanfaatan limbah pertanian. Program pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan produktivitas kambing melalui teknologi fermentasi jerami padi menggunakan rumen kambing yang dimodifikasi. Kegiatan tersebut dilaksanakan di kelompok tani "Karya Bakti", Desa Lemper, Pamekasan, yang memiliki potensi besar dalam memanfaatkan limbah jerami padi yang melimpah. Tahapan program meliputi penyuluhan, pembuatan starter fermentasi berbasis rumen kambing dengan penambahan kunyit dan temulawak, fermentasi jerami selama 14 hari, pemberian pakan fermentasi kepada kambing selama 30 hari, dan evaluasi dampaknya terhadap produktivitas ternak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fermentasi jerami padi mampu meningkatkan kandungan protein dari 3,2% menjadi 14,5% dan mengurangi serat kasar dari 34,6% menjadi 20,1%. Selain itu, pH sedotan menurun dari 6,5 menjadi 3,8, menandakan keberhasilan fermentasi dalam menciptakan kondisi anaerobik yang ideal. Akibatnya, berat rata-rata kambing meningkat sebesar 4,1 kg dalam 30 hari pemberian pakan fermentasi, disertai dengan peningkatan nafsu makan dan efisiensi pakan. Program ini memberikan solusi praktis bagi peternak dalam menghadapi pakan yang terbatas di musim kemarau, sekaligus mendukung penggunaan limbah pertanian secara optimal. Kesimpulannya, teknologi fermentasi jerami padi telah terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan kualitas pakan dan produktivitas ternak. Disarankan untuk mereplikasi program ini pada kelompok tani lain dengan kondisi serupa dan melakukan penelitian lanjutan untuk meningkatkan efisiensi fermentasi dan mengurangi biaya produksi. Dengan demikian, program ini berpotensi mendukung swasembada daging nasional dan memberdayakan peternak lokal.
