Abstract

This article reports the results of text analysis of students' statements about plagiarism. The aim is to gain an analytical understanding of the concept of plagiarism in academic work according to students' understanding. Respondents consisted of 52 students from 4 Study Programs at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Santo Thomas Catholic University, namely Elementary School Teacher Education, Indonesian Language and Literature Education, English Language Education and Mathematics Education who are working on their theses. The data consists of statements that they wrote to answer four questionnaire questions about the definition of plagiarism, forms of plagiarism, attitudes towards plagiarism, and causes of plagiarism. The analysis was carried out on the transitivity aspect using a systemic functional approach to identify elements of the process, participants, and scope of the plagiarism situation. In this way, the concept of plagiarism is understood about the form of action, targets, and how to carry out plagiarism, can be clearly identified. This study found that students have a good understanding of the form of action and targets of plagiarism, but related to the method, students' understanding is still incomplete or even incorrect. This study shows a good sign, namely that plagiarism is generally associated with bad meanings, and the causes are usually due to coercion due to things beyond the author's control.
