Abstract

Stress is a natural response to excessive pressure and is often experienced by students due to academic demands such as coursework, exams, and thesis completion. An imbalance between academic demands and an individual's ability to cope can trigger academic stress, which affects physical and mental health and motivation to study. One coping mechanism that students often use to relieve stress is alcohol consumption, even though this behavior has the potential to cause adverse health and academic effects. This study aims to analyze the relationship between academic stress levels and alcohol consumption among final semester students at the Faculty of Public Health, Nusa Cendana University. This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study consisted of 254 people. Academic stress levels were measured using the Perception of Academic Stress Scale (PASS), while alcohol consumption levels were measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Data analysis was performed using a correlation test. The results of the study showed a significant relationship between academic stress and alcohol consumption with a correlation coefficient of r = -0.892 and p = 0.000. This negative relationship indicates that the higher the level of academic stress experienced by students, the lower their tendency to consume alcohol. The majority of students were in the moderate stress category and had low alcohol consumption levels. The conclusion of this study shows that final semester students at the Faculty of Public Health, Nusa Cendana University, tend not to use alcohol as a coping mechanism in dealing with academic stress, even though they are in a highly stressful academic phase.
