ABSTRACT
Research on inner speech in psychology and philosophy has tended to examine cognitive functions, self-reflection, and meaning-making separately, limiting an integrated understanding of its role as a reflective mechanism. This study aims to synthesize the literature on inner speech as a reflective mechanism in human cognition from psychological and philosophical perspectives. A narrative review was conducted by searching scientific databases, followed by narrative synthesis of the selected literature. The findings indicate that inner speech is associated with the organization of cognitive activity, executive functions, working memory, metacognition, emotion regulation, and perspective-taking. Furthermore, internal language may support the monitoring and evaluation of thoughts and actions while helping individuals interpret experiences and develop self-understanding. Integrating psychological and philosophical perspectives yields three conceptual dimensions: the organization of cognitive activity, reflective monitoring and evaluation, and meaning-making and self-understanding. This review offers a conceptual framework for future empirical research, including investigations into relationships among these dimensions and the development of potential applications in education, psychology, and counseling.
