Abstract

ABSTRACT

Excessive social media use can reduce the time available for learning and productive activities, particularly when social media is used during periods intended for academic activities or skill development. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of positive punishment in reducing excessive social media use and increasing productive behavior. The study employed a Single Subject Research (SSR) design using an A-B-A′ model involving six subjects who used social media for five hours or more per day. The intervention was conducted for 21 days by providing a consequence in the form of reading and writing a review of two pages of a nonfiction book when social media use exceeded the predetermined limit. Data were collected through screen-time records and productive activity logs and were analyzed visually and descriptively across each phase. The results showed that five subjects experienced a reduction in social media use compared with baseline, while one subject showed inconsistent changes. All subjects demonstrated improvements in productive activities according to their respective targets. These findings indicate that positive punishment has potential as an alternative behavior-modification strategy, although individual responses varied and the sustainability of the changes requires further follow-up.
