ABSTRACT
Long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may cause gastrointestinal adverse effects and renal dysfunction, highlighting the need for alternative anti-inflammatory agents derived from natural sources. Muli banana (Musa acuminata Colla) peel contains bioactive compounds with potential anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of Muli banana peel extract obtained using a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) composed of choline chloride and lactic acid in male mice. This experimental laboratory study employed ultrasound-assisted extraction using 0.5 g (F1), 1 g (F2), and 1.5 g (F3) of powdered plant material in 10 mL of NADES. The chemical profile was analyzed using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS), while total phenolic content was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by inducing paw edema through intraplantar injection of 1% carrageenan, followed by topical application of the extract directly to the induced paw according to the assigned treatment group. The evaluated parameters included edema volume, edema diameter, and differential leukocyte counts. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's post hoc test (p < 0.05). The results revealed six putatively identified compounds and an increase in total phenolic content across F1–F3. All three formulations significantly reduced edema. F3 exhibited the highest anti-inflammatory activity, with inhibition values of 89.95% based on edema volume and 55.83% based on edema diameter, showing no statistically significant difference compared with the positive control. In conclusion, F3 demonstrated the greatest anti-inflammatory potential among the tested formulations.
