ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of gadget use intensity on the mental health of students at SMA Negeri 3 Parepare using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The increasing level of digital dependence among adolescents served as the background of this study, as excessive gadget use is suspected to affect students' psychological well-being, particularly in emotional, social, and behavioral aspects. This study employed a quantitative approach with an ex post facto research design. The population consisted of tenth- and eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Parepare, with a sample of 136 respondents selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS Statistics 25. The SDQ instrument was used to assess students' psychosocial difficulties. The findings revealed that gadget use intensity had a significant effect on students' mental health (p < 0.05), with a contribution of 60.7%. These results indicate that uncontrolled gadget use may increase psychosocial difficulties among students. Therefore, supervision, digital literacy education, and wise management of gadget use are necessary to maintain adolescents' mental health in both school and family environments.
