ABSTRACT
Sex education in Indonesia remains a controversial issue, particularly at the junior high school level, resulting in limited adolescent understanding of reproductive health. This study aims to analyze how sex education at SMPN X Yogyakarta fosters adolescents’ awareness and understanding, as well as to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving one guidance counselor and four ninth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that prior to formal sex education, students had very limited knowledge and were largely influenced by inaccurate information from peers and social media. The implementation of sex education in schools has been shown to improve students’ understanding of reproductive health, correct misconceptions, and promote more responsible behavior, such as the ability to resist peer pressure and increased self-awareness. However, its implementation still faces several challenges, including social stigma, embarrassment, limited instructional time, and cultural as well as institutional constraints. Therefore, a more comprehensive and interactive approach, along with support from parents and educational policies, is needed to enhance the effectiveness of sex education in schools.
