Academic stress is one of the problems that college students may experience as a result of the academic demands they face, one of which is related to social comparison. This study aims to examine the relationship between social comparison and academic stress among college students, both in general and based on specific dimensions, namely ability comparison and opinion comparison. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design involving 163 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Psychology at University X as respondents, selected using convenience sampling. Data collection was conducted using two measurement instruments: the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM), consisting of 9 items (α = 0.727), and the Lakaev Academic Stress Response Scale-2 (LASRS-2), consisting of 26 items (α = 0.913). The results of the study indicate that social comparison has a positive and significant relationship with academic stress (r = 0.276; R² = 0.076; β = 0.276; p < .001). Similarly, ability comparison was found to have a positive and significant relationship with academic stress (r = 0.285; R² = 0.081; β = 0.285; p < .001). Meanwhile, opinion comparison does not have a significant relationship with academic stress (r = 0.122; R² = 0.015; β = 0.122; p = .122). Thus, this study is expected to provide information regarding the relationship between social comparison and academic stress, as well as serve as a basis for consideration in future research.
