Abstract

Working students face dual demands to fulfill academic and work responsibilities simultaneously. This condition may generate work-study conflict when demands in one role interfere with the fulfillment of demands in the other role. This study aims to analyze the forms, contributing factors, impacts, and management strategies of work-study conflict among working students in Medan City. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. Informants were selected purposively, and data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that conflict primarily occurs through schedule clashes, limited study time, work demands, physical and emotional fatigue, and decreased academic motivation. These conditions affect students’ ability to complete academic assignments, prepare for academic activities, and maintain engagement in the educational process. Students manage the conflict through time management, priority setting, adjustment of work activities, self-regulation, and social support. The study emphasizes the need for adaptive academic support for working students through time-management guidance, academic communication, and flexible environments that accommodate work and educational demands. These findings are relevant to higher education institutions in developing responsive educational services that recognize students’ responsibilities and conditions.
