Abstract

The phenomenon of fear of missing out (FoMO), defined as social anxiety arising from the apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent, has escalated alongside the pervasive adoption of social media among adolescents. Senior high school represents a pivotal developmental phase for students to achieve identity exploration stability, which is theoretically vulnerable to digital social comparison. This study aimed to map the levels of FoMO and identity exploration among tenth-grade students at SMAN 7 Banjarmasin, as well as to examine statistically how FoMO predicts their identity exploration. A quantitative correlational predictive design was implemented, involving 304 tenth-grade students selected via simple random sampling from an accessible population of 432 students. Data were collected using four-point Likert scale questionnaires with proven item validity and reliability, and subsequently analyzed through descriptive statistics and simple linear regression using SPSS version 31. Descriptive findings indicated that the majority of students exhibited moderate levels of both FoMO (61.5%) and identity exploration (56.6%). Simple linear regression analysis confirmed that FoMO significantly predicted students' identity exploration, yielding a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.516, a coefficient of determination (R^2) of 0.266, an unstandardized regression coefficient (B) of -1.360, a standardized coefficient (β) of -0.516, and a significance value of p<0.001. The negative direction indicates that higher FoMO is statistically associated with lower stability in students' identity exploration. These findings underscore the necessity of school guidance and counseling interventions centered on self-concept enhancement, emotional regulation, and adaptive digital literacy for secondary school adolescents.
