Abstract

Anxiety in public speaking is often experienced by people aged 18 to 25 years. On the other hand, self-compassion is considered a form of defense to reduce anxiety. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-compassion and anxiety in public speaking in undergraduate students. The method used is a non-experimental quantitative with a correlational approach. The sampling technique used purposive sampling and finally obtained 396 student respondents aged 18–25 years. Data were collected through distributing questionnaires using Google Forms to students who have had public speaking experience within 1 year. The correlation test used is the nonparametric Spearman Rank test. The results of the analysis show a positive relationship between self-compassion and anxiety in public speaking in undergraduate students, evidenced by sig. <0.001 (sig. <0.05). The negative correlation coefficient (–0.447) indicates that higher levels of self-compassion are associated with lower scores of public speaking anxiety. On the other hand, the higher the anxiety in public speaking, the lower the self- compassion in students. The results of this study also found that students who are busy with social activities can reduce the risk of anxiety in public speaking.
