Abstract

Adolescents living in orphanages face more complex psychological challenges, such as limited emotional support, the absence of primary caregivers, and a highly regulated social environment. These conditions often trigger stress and shape the coping strategies they adopt. This study aims to identify the dominant coping stress strategies used by adolescents in Orphanage X, addressing a research gap since previous studies have largely focused on students and working adults rather than institutionalized adolescents. A descriptive quantitative design was employed, involving 120 adolescents selected through total sampling. The instrument used was a coping stress scale consisting of two dimensions: problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. The results showed that most adolescents used emotion-focused coping at a moderate level (60.8%), higher than problem-focused coping. These findings highlight that adolescents in orphanages rely more on emotional regulation strategies rather than direct problem-solving. The practical implication of this study is the need for structured interventions, such as psychoeducation, group counseling, and emotional regulation training, to enhance adaptive coping skills and promote psychological well-being among institutionalized adolescents.
