The use of drugs and addiction is a prevalent psychiatric issue that imposes a burden on individuals, families, communities, and even the nation. The burden caused by drug addiction cases can manifest in various forms, including physical, mental, economic (both individual and broader scope), legal, social, and healthcare burdens. Aggressiveness, particularly within correctional institutions, is a common but often overlooked issue. Aggressive and impulsive behavior can arise from underlying psychological problems or as a consequence of excessive or chronic substance use. This literature review aims to provide an explanation of addiction and illicit drug use from the aspects of definition, symptoms, diagnosis, therapy, and issues related to aggressive and impulsive behavior among substance users in correctional facilities.
