Abstract

The increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies into higher education has created new opportunities to support the learning process. However, the effectiveness of technology utilization is not solely determined by technical availability, but also by students' active involvement in learning activities. This study aims to analyze the role of AI utilization and digital infrastructure in enhancing learning effectiveness, with student engagement serving as a mediating variable among students at Institut Teknologi Kalimantan. A quantitative survey approach was administered to 347 active students across faculties and cohorts selected through multistage stratified sampling. Data were gathered using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with a second-order construct through the Hierarchical Component Model. The results demonstrate that AI usage and digital infrastructure exert positive and significant effects on student engagement and learning effectiveness. Furthermore, student engagement partially mediates the effects of AI usage and digital infrastructure on learning effectiveness, with AI usage exhibiting a more dominant total contribution.
