Abstract

ABSTRACT

The transition toward sustainable energy in the transportation sector depends not only on technological development but also on everyday mobility choices and behaviors, including those of university students as active transportation users. This study aims to understand how university students perceive their role in supporting the transition toward sustainable energy through more environmentally friendly transportation choices, focusing on mode selection, barriers, social influences, and the types of institutional support needed from the university. A qualitative approach was employed involving 10 active students at Universitas Tarumanagara, consisting of one participant in an in-depth interview and nine participants who responded to an open-ended essay questionnaire. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questions and analyzed thematically through data familiarization, identification of significant statements, initial coding, code grouping, theme development, and cross-participant comparison. The findings indicate that students' transportation choices are influenced by environmental awareness, while mobility decisions are also shaped by cost, distance, travel time, efficiency, accessibility, comfort, safety, and technical limitations of electric vehicles. Peer influence, experiences with more sustainable transportation modes, and the availability of supportive campus facilities also encourage more sustainable mobility choices. The study concludes that students' role in supporting sustainable transportation is contextual and shaped by the interaction between environmental awareness, mobility needs, social conditions, and the availability of supporting infrastructure. Therefore, promoting sustainable student mobility requires not only individual awareness but also an enabling social and institutional environment.
