ABSTRACT
Social behavior in school settings is an important indicator in shaping healthy interactions and students’ social adjustment. One emerging phenomenon is phubbing behavior, defined as the tendency to ignore direct social interactions due to excessive smartphone use. This phenomenon is important to examine in the student context because it has the potential to reduce the quality of social interaction amid the increasing use of digital technology in daily life. This study aims to determine the relationship between phubbing behavior and social relationships among eleventh-grade students at MA NW Penendem in the 2025/2026 academic year. The study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design, using questionnaires to measure phubbing behavior and students’ social relationships. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation test to determine the strength of the relationship between variables. The results showed a significant relationship between phubbing behavior and students’ social relationships, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.633, which is higher than the r-table value of 0.2609, and a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. The relationship is negative, indicating that higher levels of phubbing behavior are associated with lower quality of students’ social relationships. These findings suggest that managing smartphone use is an important factor in maintaining the quality of students’ social interactions in school environments.
