ABSTRACT
Medical students undergo an educational process characterized by academic and emotional demands that may give rise to doubts about their competence, even when their academic achievements indicate success. The impostor phenomenon has been examined in relation to various psychological and family factors; however, an in-depth understanding is still needed of how medical students interpret the relationship between their actual selves, ideal selves, and family experiences. This study aims to explore the self-concept of medical students who experience the impostor phenomenon within the context of family relationships. A qualitative approach employing thematic analysis was used. Four medical students were selected through purposive sampling after undergoing screening with the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS), using a minimum score of 61 as the inclusion criterion. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that two participants demonstrated relatively congruent relationships between their actual and ideal selves, whereas the other two exhibited incongruence. Nevertheless, all four participants continued to experience doubts about their competence. Success and praise were interpreted in different ways: as recognition of personal ability, as outcomes attributable to external factors, or as pressure to maintain performance. Family relationships served as a context in which values, standards, support, and parenting experiences were formed, although these were internalized differently by each participant. The study concludes that the impostor phenomenon cannot be adequately explained solely by individual ability or family support; rather, it needs to be understood through the processes by which individuals evaluate themselves and interpret evidence of their competence.
