Abstract

ABSTRACT

Loneliness is a psychological experience that may arise when individuals perceive that their social relationships do not adequately fulfill their need for connectedness during emerging adulthood. One psychological characteristic relevant to this context is alexithymia, which refers to difficulties in identifying and expressing emotional experiences accurately. This study aimed to examine the predictive relationship between alexithymia and loneliness among individuals in emerging adulthood in Indonesia. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, involving 325 participants aged 18–29 years who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20) and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. The data were analyzed using simple linear regression to examine the predictive relationship between the two variables. The results indicated a positive and significant predictive relationship between alexithymia and loneliness (β = 0.550; p < 0.001), with an R² value of 0.302. This finding indicates that alexithymia accounted for 30.2% of the variance in loneliness scores within the research model. Thus, difficulties in processing and communicating emotional experiences were associated with variations in loneliness among individuals in emerging adulthood. These findings provide empirical evidence regarding the relationship between the two constructs in the Indonesian context and may serve as a consideration for psychological research and services addressing emotional processing and interpersonal connectedness.
