Abstract

Mental health issues among university students have received increasing attention due to the growing need for psychological services, yet the utilization of such services remains relatively low. One factor believed to influence this condition is perceived stigmatization toward individuals seeking professional psychological help, while studies examining this relationship among architecture students remain limited. This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived stigmatization and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help among students of the Architecture Study Program at Widya Mandira University, Kupang. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The population consisted of 281 active students from the Architecture Study Program at Widya Mandira University, Kupang. A total of 163 students were selected using the Krejcie and Morgan table with proportional random sampling. The instruments used were the Perceptions of Stigmatization by Others for Seeking Help (PSOSH) to measure perceived stigmatization and the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale–Short Form (ATSPPH-SF) to measure attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, linearity testing through scatterplots, and Spearman's rho correlation analysis. The descriptive analysis indicated that both perceived stigmatization and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help were at a moderate level. The hypothesis testing revealed a strong, significant negative relationship between perceived stigmatization and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (ρ = −0.611, p < .001). These findings indicate that the higher the perceived stigmatization among students, the lower their attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Conversely, lower perceived stigmatization was associated with more positive attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help.
