Abstract

Science learning in the 21st century emphasizes the importance of strengthening scientific literacy as an essential competence for students to understand scientific phenomena, evaluate evidence-based information, and make informed decisions. However, the level of scientific literacy among Indonesian junior high school students remains relatively low, particularly in complex and abstract topics such as the human respiratory system. This study aimed to analyze the improvement of students’ scientific literacy through the implementation of classroom discussion supported by infographic media on the respiratory system topic. This research employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test post-test design. The research participants consisted of 30 seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 52 Surabaya in the 2025/2026 academic year. Scientific literacy data were collected using multiple-choice tests administered during the pre-test and post-test stages. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-Gain analysis, and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test to determine the significance of differences between pre-test and post-test scores. The results indicated that all scientific literacy indicators improved from pre-test to post-test, with N-Gain values categorized as moderate. The Wilcoxon test yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, indicating a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores. These findings demonstrate that classroom discussion assisted by infographic media has a positive effect on enhancing students’ scientific literacy on the respiratory system topic and can serve as an alternative instructional strategy in junior high school science learning.

ABSTRAK

Pembelajaran IPA abad ke-21 menuntut penguatan literasi sains sebagai kemampuan esensial bagi murid dalam memahami fenomena ilmiah, mengevaluasi informasi berbasis bukti, dan mengambil keputusan yang tepat. Namun, capaian literasi sains murid SMP di Indonesia masih tergolong rendah, khususnya pada materi sistem pernapasan yang bersifat abstrak dan kompleks. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis peningkatan literasi sains murid melalui penerapan pembelajaran classroom discussion berbantuan media infografis pada materi sistem pernapasan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode pre-eksperimental dan desain one-group pre-test post-test design. Subjek penelitian adalah 30 murid kelas VII-E SMP Negeri 52 Surabaya tahun ajaran 2025/2026. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes literasi sains berbentuk pilihan ganda yang diberikan pada tahap pre-test dan post-test. Data dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif, perhitungan N-Gain, serta uji Wilcoxon Signed-Rank untuk mengetahui perbedaan signifikan antara skor sebelum dan sesudah treatment. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa seluruh indikator literasi sains mengalami peningkatan dari pre-test ke post-test dengan nilai N-Gain pada kategori sedang. Uji Wilcoxon menghasilkan nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) sebesar 0,000, yang menandakan adanya perbedaan signifikan antara skor pre-test dan post-test. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran classroom discussion berbantuan media infografis berpengaruh positif terhadap peningkatan literasi sains murid pada materi sistem pernapasan dan dapat dijadikan sebagai alternatif strategi pembelajaran IPA di tingkat SMP.
