Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of parental expectation on student engagement with self-efficacy as a mediating variable among final-year undergraduate students in Makassar State University. A total of 384 students participated in this study, selected using the accidental sampling technique. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression and mediation testing through path analysis. The results indicate that parental expectation has a positive and significant effect on self-efficacy (p < 0.001), self-efficacy has a positive and significant effect on student engagement (p < 0.001), and parental expectation also has a direct positive effect on student engagement (p = 0.029). Furthermore, the mediation test reveals a partial mediation effect of self-efficacy (p = 0.049), indicating that parental expectations can enhance students’ academic engagement both directly and indirectly through increased self-efficacy. These findings highlight the importance of parental support and expectations while emphasizing the need for students to develop strong self-efficacy to optimize their engagement in completing their final projects. Therefore, the implication of this study is that parents are expected not only to place pressure on achievement, but also to be present as a source of emotional support and motivation, so that the expectations given function as encouragement rather than a burden.
