Abstract

ABSTRACT

The intensity of social media engagement among young adults does not always correspond with their ability to regulate digital behavior. When access, interaction, and stimulation occur continuously, self-control becomes a relevant factor in understanding the emergence of addictive tendencies. This study examines the relationship between these two constructs among social media users aged 18–24 years. A total of 107 active social media users were selected through systematic sampling in a quantitative study employing a correlational design. Measurement was conducted using standardized instruments, while the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation. The analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between self-control and social media addiction (r = –0.505; p < 0.001), with a moderate strength of association. This pattern indicates that stronger self-regulation is associated with lower tendencies toward social media addiction. However, the magnitude of the correlation also suggests that addictive behavior cannot be fully explained by a single psychological factor. These findings reinforce the position of self-control as a protective factor and provide an empirical basis for developing self-regulation training, digital well-being programs, and preventive strategies to promote healthier and more responsible social media use.
