Abstract

This study aims to explore the dynamics of resilience and mental health among adolescents in the "City of Civilization," Wasior, West Papua. As a region with a significant historical-spiritual legacy through the prophecies of I.S. Kijne, adolescents in Wasior face challenges related to cultural transition, digital information access, and social risks such as alcohol consumption. Utilizing Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with an idiographic approach, this research involved six native Wondama adolescents selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected via participant observation, in-depth interviews, and source triangulation. The thematic analysis identified four superordinate themes: (1) The Voice of Aitumeiri as an internalization of the city’s civilized identity; (2) Beachfront dynamics reflecting the conflict between escapism and productivity; (3) The safety net of the "Great House" as a form of collective family support; and (4) The vision of a new dawn illustrating aspirations for optimal functioning. The findings indicate that the resilience of Wasior's adolescents stems from strong cultural identity and spirituality, serving as an emotional anchor in achieving a state of flourishing. This study recommends the importance of mental health interventions based on indigenous wisdom to support the psychological functioning of adolescents in remote areas.
