Abstract

This study aims to investigate in-depth the influence of self-efficacy, or belief in one's own abilities, on burnout in a population of Taekwondo athletes in Surabaya. Amidst the high pressure of intensive physical training and the demands of highly competitive competitions, athletes often face significant risks of physical and emotional exhaustion, potentially triggering burnout. In this context, self-efficacy is believed to be a crucial psychological factor influencing an individual's response to pressure, where overconfidence can actually be a double-edged sword. Using a quantitative approach with a causal design to examine cause-and-effect relationships, this study involved a sample of 112 Taekwondo athletes carefully selected through a purposive sampling technique. Primary data were collected using instruments in the form of self-efficacy scales and burnout scales that have been tested for validity, then analyzed statistically using a simple linear regression test to model the influence between variables. The results of the data analysis showed that self-efficacy has a positive and significant effect on burnout, as evidenced by a regression coefficient value of 0.645 and a significance level of 0.000 (p < 0.05). These interesting findings indicate that the higher an athlete's self-confidence, the greater their potential for burnout. This may occur because athletes with high self-efficacy tend to set unrealistic standards, ignore fatigue signals, and continue pushing themselves beyond their limits without adequate recovery. Therefore, these conclusions underscore the urgency of balanced self-efficacy management for coaches and athletes, as well as the importance of implementing effective coping strategies and educating Taekwondo athletes about the importance of rest to prevent chronic mental and physical fatigue.
