Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the representation of toxic masculinity in the character Rama in the film Penyalin Cahaya (Photocopier, 2021) directed by Wregas Bhanuteja, using a literary psychology approach through the theory of Terry A. Kupers. The film presents various social issues, including sexual violence, power manipulation, and emotional repression within a university setting. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis and literature study techniques, focusing on scenes, dialogues, and social relations involving the character Rama as the main object. The findings reveal that Rama embodies multiple aspects of toxic masculinity, such as emotional armoring, fragile self-esteem, competitive masculine culture, objectification of women, displaced aggression, fear of intimacy, and failure to redefine power. Through Kupers’ framework, it is evident that Rama’s behavior is not merely individual, but a reflection of patriarchal structures that demand men suppress emotions and assert dominance. This study concludes that Penyalin Cahaya not only critiques sexual violence but also invites critical reflection on how patriarchal culture shapes men into both agents of domination and victims of toxic constructions of masculinity.

ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji representasi toxic masculinity pada tokoh Rama dalam film Penyalin Cahaya (2021) karya Wregas Bhanuteja, dengan menggunakan pendekatan psikologi sastra melalui teori Terry A. Kupers. Film ini menampilkan berbagai isu sosial, termasuk kekerasan seksual, manipulasi kekuasaan, dan represi emosional dalam lingkungan kampus. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik analisis isi dan studi pustaka, yang difokuskan pada adegan, dialog, dan relasi sosial tokoh Rama sebagai objek utama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Rama merepresentasikan berbagai aspek maskulinitas toksik seperti emotional armoring, harga diri rapuh, budaya kompetisi, objektifikasi perempuan, pengalihan kekerasan, ketakutan akan intimasi, serta kegagalan dalam melakukan redefinisi kekuasaan. Melalui teori Kupers, ditemukan bahwa perilaku Rama bukanlah sekadar tindakan individual, melainkan cerminan dari struktur patriarkal yang menuntut laki-laki untuk menekan emosi dan mempertahankan dominasi. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa Penyalin Cahaya tidak hanya menyajikan kritik atas kekerasan seksual, tetapi juga membuka ruang refleksi tentang bagaimana budaya patriarkal membentuk laki-laki menjadi pelaku dominasi sekaligus korban dari konstruksi maskulinitas yang toksik.
