Abstract

ABSTRACT

The increasing amount of plastic waste that is difficult to decompose is a serious challenge for the environment, so innovation is needed in its utilization. One of the developing approaches is the use of plastic waste as an additional material or even a mixture in the manufacture of lightweight concrete. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding plastic waste on the physical and mechanical properties of lightweight concrete, while providing an economical and environmentally friendly construction material solution. The plastic waste used is PET (Polythylene Terephthalate) waste which is processed into small granules and used as an additional material for making lightweight concrete. The method used is a laboratory experiment with variations in plastic waste of 2%, and 4% of the amount of fine aggregate. The research process includes the stages of material preparation, parameter testing on materials, planning & making concrete (slump test), concrete molding, curing for 28 days, and testing concrete samples. The results show that the addition of 4% plastic waste reduces the specific gravity of concrete but the compressive strength of the concrete also decreases by 0.004.34 MPa. In addition, the addition of PET-type plastic waste with that composition is considered efficient because it can reduce the use of natural aggregates, lower production costs, and support plastic waste management, thus serving as an economical and environmentally friendly construction material solution.
